P4- WHY CAN A SHIP FLOAT?

Speaking about transports, our P4 pupils were wondering why a ship can float.
"It is so heavy and made out of iron, why it doesn't sink?"
After this question, we decided to do an experiment to find it out!
First of all, we wrote down some first ideas that we had about why a ship can float:
- Because the air inside the ship.
- Because it has a motor that makes it float.
- Because it has a life-preserver.
- Because the screw makes it go super-fast so it has no time to sink.
- Because a ship is super big and it has a big area to float.
- Because it's made of wood.
- Because turning the helm, the captain avoids sinking.
After this brainstorming, we decided how to do the experiment: we would use a fish tank and throw different objects inside, to see if they float or sink, for example a balloon, a toy car, a piece of wood, a piece of cork, a plasticine ball, etc. And we would watch it carefully to discover what makes the things float or sink.
The experiment was super interesting and funny! We played with the objects inside the water and tried different ways to throw it in.
After trying we figured out that is the air what makes the things float!! Because all the things we threw that had got air inside stayed floating meanwhile the ones that hadn’t got air, sinked.

Finally!! We got it!! We are so happy about our discovery!! And we are good scientists also, because one of our first ideas was the real reason!!
Congratulations! We are a great team!
